Michael Moore's Story

My Great Grandfather was
12017 Private James Kane 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
Of 14 Garden Lane (off Frances Street) Dublin 8.

He joined the 6th (Service) Battalion in Nass in August 1914 as part of the 10th (Irish) Division. He embarked on H.M.T. Alauia from Davenport calling at Gibralta Malta ,Alexandria and the Greek Island of Lemnos. On 25 July they sailed to Mitylene the jumping off point for Gallipoli.They then went on the Transports Sania and Faunette and landed at "C" Beach.He was wounded in the Battle of Suvla and returned home.When he was fit and well he was posted to the 2nd Batt Royal Dublin Fusiliers 10th Infantry Brigade 4th Division on the Western Front.

He was killed in action on the 21st April 1916 and layed to rest in Bienvillers Military Cemetery France. He was awarded the 1915 Star Medal plus British War and Victory Medals you can see these medals on my Uniform Above which I proudly wear.
