When The Last Hand Comes Aboard by Richard John Scarr (Brighton, England)

No more a Watch to stand, Old Sailor You are outward bound on an ebbing tide. Eight Bells has rung, and last Watch done. Now a new berth waits you on the other side.

Her boilers with full head of steam. Cargo stowed and Galley stored. Just waiting to get underway. When the last Hand comes aboard.

Look sharp, that Hand is you, Old Sailor. And you'll be sailing out on Heavenly Seas. May the wind be ever at your back. Fair weather, and God speed!

Name: conor galvin E-mail address: cg1galvin@eircom.net Comments: War dead honoured at Glencree THE 50th anniversary of the dedication of the only German military cemetery in Ireland was held at Glencree last Sunday, with a solemn ecumenical Remembrance Day service in the Wicklow Mountains. Representatives of the German Embassy and members of Irish Veterans Organisations attended the poignant service. However, it was the laying of a wreath by German Ambassador Dr. Eckhard Lubkemeir and the Military attaché to the German Embassy in London that held a special significance for all present to mark the memories of fallen soldiers. One of the guests was Fr. Fritz O'kelly from the Friary, Wexford, who is author of the new book 'Love from Zambia' which is being launched on Thursday. He was an interpreter for 168 German seamen brought from the Bay of Biscay to Cobh in 1943 on the Wexford ship MV Kerlogue. Two of Fr. Fritz's friends are buried at Glencree. Representatives of the Irish Naval Association and the Royal British Legion in Ireland also laid wreaths. Members of the German Lutheran Church in Ireland, the Irish UN Veterans Association also attended. Lutheran Pastor Corinna Diestelkamp celebrated an ecumenical service at St. Kevin's with the Very Reverend John Sinnott. The Goethe Institute Choir accompanied the service. There are 134 people buried at the German military cemetery in Glencree - six soldiers from World War I, 81 soldiers from World War II, 46 civilians and one spy. The soldiers from World War I buried there were prisoners in a POW camp in Ireland, then part of the United Kingdom. The WWII servicemen buried at Glencree were mainly Luftwaffe airmen who had crashed here or navy personnel washed up on Irish soil. The 46 civilians were on board the British SS Arandora Star, being transferred to Canada from England when it was sunk by a German U-boat. The spy is Hermann Goetz who parachuted into Ireland in 1940 and for a time lived at Laragh Castle. Over 360 Shipmates paraded with 62 Area and Branch standards and the National Standards of the RNA, RMA, WRNS Association and the Irish Naval Association. The Reviewing Officer was the First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope GCB OBE. The National President of the RNA Vice Admiral John McAnally CB LVO laid a wreath as did Mr Les Dwyer the President of the Naval Association of Australia and Mr.Gerry Kennedy President of the Irish Naval Association. The RNA was joined by their comrades of the RBL Llanelli band. The First Sea Lord addressed the parade on completion and his stirring words are attached. Our National President called for 3 cheers for the Naval Service and had two re-scrubs until it could be heard in No 10 and 11 Downing Street, 500 metres away. Shipmates enjoyed a light finger buffet and a libation in the Civil Service afterwards and had the chance to meet with the First Sea Lord. The Irish Association contingent lead the singing but the drinking competition was declared a draw! Wednesday, September 14th 2011 - 03:10:02 AM

As a man entitle to a ROI passport and most of my extended family in the Dublin area, it was wonderful to hear the brogue and the sense of fun. As I said to my staff this morning the sing-song reminded me of every wake I have been to at home, that sense of friendship, fun and joy. I have to say that as I was standing next to your standard bearer waiting for the parade to march past looking down at the band, the standards and 300+ shipmates, the old heart skipped a beat. As a way of keeping in touch I would like to put you on the list of our monthly newsletter, You will then be briefed up as our own branches. We love your piece on the website. I tried to chat to as many as I could and expressed to all of them how much I enjoyed meeting with them and having a really fun time. You were all most welcome and I know from many comments I received from our own members on parade that your presence was very much appreciated. I hope that we can welcome you again in the future and perhaps we could come over and join you on one of your occasions, maybe establishing alternate year visits to maintain and enhance our fellowship of seafarers. Please pass on my best wishes to all in your Association and I sincerely hope to have the chance to meet up with many of your members in the future - even if it means making a private visit of my own. My best regards, Chris Dovey National Chairman RNA Tuesday, September 13th 2011 - 05:40:14 AM

Name: pierce m. power E-mail address: pmpower@tiscali.co.uk Comments: I would like to convey my deepest sympathy to the family of the late ex cpo Jimmy Quinn, signals. I had the privilge of being taught by Jimmy in the late sixty's and early seventy's in signals. He was a gentleman and a first class instructor in the art of visual signals. May he rest in peace. Name: Peadar Kinsella E-mail address: kpknerja@yahoo.com Comments: It is indeed with deep regret that I have learned of the death of ex-CPO Jimmy Quinn. Having served in Signals from 1957-62 I knew him very well and he was a very easy man to like. He possesed that rare quality of being a natural leader of men. He was able to get things done quietly and without ever seeming to raise his voice, --and always a good humoured "twinkle" in his eye. His skills as a Visual Signaller were outstanding--there was no VHF radio in the service until 1962 so everything in and around Cork Harbour was done with Visual Signals. One outstanding memory I have of Jimmy was his ability to communicate with Slua Muire summer visits to Fort Camden using just a small old telescope to read semaphore/lamp signals from Camden. He was always the man to call to handle a difficult situation with calm authority and skill. Rest in Peace Jimmy. Peadar Kinsella ex-P.O. R/R/M. Tuesday, November 30th 2010 - 05:18:19 PM

In the martello tower we found three bells one had no name on it but the other two are from L.E.Maev and L.E.Muirchu There were a couple of Bells in block 4 When I find the list of exhibits I will let you know the ships names' but as you know every thing there went up in smoke. John. Glad to here the Grainne's Bell is in Cathal Brugha The Navy are giving some stuff from the Martello Tower in Haulbowline to Collins Bks in Dublin I was there a few weeks ago and they are setting up a small section for the Naval Service. In the N.C.O.Mess all formar W.O.s have their names on a board in the hall way'perhaps a board in the Naval School with all the names on it would be a good idea ' after all nearly all our D.S.Ms passed through there and young recruits will get to know their names and can have something to aspire to. Im sure funding for this project would be forthcoming from the Naval Asocation/Naval Branch O.N.E.T/Cobh Branch O.N.E.T. Regards to all Pat Thursday, June 4th 2009 - 11:34:14 AM

Name: Paul Murphy E-mail address: trpsarge@hotmail.com Comments: Interesting concept about the certificate. i think in some cases the DSMs that have been award should have been noted on the bridge wing of the ships involved as per the USN as given the heroic acts were those of the individuals the whole ships crew would have a contributory part to the award but have gone for the most part unrecognised. I don't begrudge any of the individuals the awards but know there were acts that went unrecorded and unrecognised even though they may have been related to the events that merited award. The NA in Dublin did pay nice tribute to L/Sea Mick Quinn..even though he was from louth... but he'd forgive them. even plaques on the bridge on the vessels to recognise that the ward was granted when the receipient was a member of the ships crew would be nice. It was after all a team effort in most cases and the crews deserve some recognition. Thursday, May 28th 2009 - 10:30:54 PM

On 8 January 1979, the oil tanker the Betelgeuse was unloading her cargo, composed of 74,000 tonnes of Arabian heavy crude oil and 40,000 tonnes of Arabian light crude oil, at the Gulf Oil Terminal on Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay. The 40,000 tonnes of light were still onboard when the vessel exploded. The Betelgeuse was split in two in the explosion. Both parts sank and the 40,000 tonnes of Arabian light crude oil were spilled. The explosion also set the vessel on fire. The jetty and the terminal were seriously damaged, but the 18 storage tanks on Whiddy Island were luckily unaffected. The 42 crew members of the Betelgeuse and 7 workers from the oil terminal died in the explosion. Sunday, March 22nd 2009 - 05:56:52 PM

Name: Terry Cummins E-mail address: navalassociation@eircom.net Homepage URL: http://homepage.eircom.net/~navalassociation/index.htm Comments: It has been a sad week for the Navy with the death of well know former and serving members. It brings even more saddness when a young man passes away from cancer at a very young age and with a bright future ahead of him Naturally I refer to P/O ERA Fergus Phelan who died of cancer last Sunday 8th and buried after a ceremony in Cobh Cathedral. The week previous Lt Dan McCarthy (NS) Retd.passed away and we learn also on Sunday 8th Feb. P/O Mick Coffee had also passed away from complications following heart surgery 3 days earlier. With the funerals of Mick Coffee in Templemore and the funeral of young LS Phelan in Cobh The Naval Service were there in force to do just honours to their former colleagues. At the funeral in Tullamore for Mick Coffee it was well attended by members of the Naval Association and the Commander George Branch of ONET. A very fine lineup of Senior NCO's from the base provided the Honour Guard and acted as Pall Bearers during the funeral ceremony. A large gathering attended the funeral Mass particularly from a wide audience Mick had for his Saturday and Sunday morning radio programme's "Coffee for Breakfast" on Radio TIP FM. It is nice to see that Former members of the Naval Service and Naval Service Reserve will always be remembered long after they have left the service. The George Crosbie Branch of the ONET in Cork and the Naval Association (Dublin, Waterford and Limerick) will always welcome new memebers irrespective of your availability to attend the respective meeting points. 20th April 2008

Dear Terry Cathie and I would like to say ‘thank you’ for, firstly, inviting us to join the Naval Association cruise and then for all the hard work you and Margaret put in on our behalf in the organisation of such a wonderful holiday. The invitation, last September could not have come at a more opportune time. Cathie had just had major surgery and was awaiting the results of tests etcetera when the invitation came. Following the plans on the website and making our own preparations helped to distract us from the overwhelming worry. It was great to meet old friends and meet new ones. Cathie was so happy to be made so welcome. She is normally a retiring sort of person but was put at her ease straight away. We both had a wonderful time and look forward to meeting you again. Every good wish for you and continuing success to the Association. Cathie and Frank Doyle

He was a true gentleman of the old school and will be remembered by myself with great fondness. He Drove us in his own car to Collins Bks for our medicals for the NS the day we joined up. He attended our passing out parades and I remember the night of the 16th of Feb. 1988 when I had the honour of piping him aboard L.E Eithne. A great loss.
